Big Cat Family Species. Most, like the margay, are relatively small. The puma and jaguarundi spread to south america during the second ice age, whereas the cheetah migrated back into eurasia and ultimately into africa.
It is the combination of their feline grace and their killer instinct that makes the big cats so irresistible. The wild cat species are grouped by the eight lineages of the felidae cat family: Members of this family are called felid or feline.
Despite being (on average) larger than a leopard, the mountain lion is not considered to be a big cat, as it cannot roar.
